Barry McCormack was born in Athlone, Ireland, where he was educated and later studied Engineering at University College Cork. He emigrated to Vancouver, Canada, with his wife Mary in 1976.
They have two children: Ciara, born in 1979, who you'll hear from; and Conor, born in 1981, who works with a multi national marketing company since he graduated from the Commerce program at the University of British Columbia.
A keen sports enthusiast, Barry coached both Ciara's and Conor's soccer teams for a number of years. When Ciara expressed an interest in pursuing a US College sports scholarship, Barry enthusiastically researched the process leading to Ciara receiving a number of scholarship offers.
After Ciara went to play soccer at Yale University in Connecticut USA, Barry presented a popular seminar series called 'Winning a US College Sports Scholarship' to many interested parents and athletes, which gave him the idea for the books.
These are his first book projects. Barry is also a keen video hobbyist and has produced a number of variety programs for local TV, as well as 'winning' sports videos for student athletes.
Ciara McCormack was born in Vancouver with a soccer ball attached to her feet. It wasn't until she was 7 years old, however, that she started playing soccer, but she hasn't stopped thinking, planning or playing the sport since.
It has been rumoured that she wore her soccer boots to her Yale graduation! Following Yale, having a year's NCAA eligibility remaining due to an injury in her senior year, Ciara was recruited to play for top ranked University of Connecticut.
Ciara has played professional soccer with Fortuna Hjorring Denmark (runners up in the 2003 UEFA Cup Championships) as well as the Vancouver Whitecaps and Ottawa Fury of the North America W League.
Currently she is studying for her Masters in International Studies at Aalborg University (Denmark).
Also busy as a founder of girlsCan soccer academy, we are happy that Ciara was able to find the time to share with us some of her personal experiences as a student athlete at both the academically renowned Yale University and the athletic powerhouse University of Connecticut.
